"Turning local wood into Art" is my slogan. I collect most of my wood comes from my neighborhood of Thalia in Virginia Beach, thus the name "The Thalia Collection."

I started working with wood full time in 1986. I am self-taught, which has allowed a sense of creative play to enter my work. Around 1990 I discovered that I could shape wood on the edge of a stationary belt sander. This realization was the birth of the technique I am still using today. The belt sander limited what I could do, so I started looking for other tools. Through my search, I found hand-held grinders and a selection of small sanders, which allowed me to take my designs even further. As a child, I loved spending time on and around water, which is reflected in my work today. I enjoy working with a variety of hardwoods, usually creating pieces with at least two contrasting woods. I believe the more extreme the contrast, the more interesting the result. Enjoy my work. Contact me if I can create a unique piece for your home or a special gift.

Born from a passion for creating handmade, unique items, I began building reclaimed wood furniture in 2007. I have been experimenting with materials of all kinds to discover how they can be integrated into my work. What started as a hobby turned into a love for the craft, then blossomed into a career of creating custom designs for clients. That’s why with every customer and every project, I offer personal consultation. It’s the moment for you to tell me your ideas and vision; and I can offer my experience and skill to bring each vision to fruition. I use only the finest, hand-picked materials and finishes in every project, and do everything I can to use local sources as much as possible.

I'm a retired nurse, turned woodworking artist. What started out as a passionate hobby combining woodwork and design in order to achieve unique living spaces, quickly became my new career. I use reclaimed cedar fencing to create wood wall art specializing in mountains, oceans and butterfly wood quilt blocks. In addition to selling my work online through a website that I maintain, I have recently started attending art shows and festivals. Since my work is a bit unique, I love explaining the process and meeting new people. I am continually inspired by the world around me and look forward to each new piece that I create.

Twin Oaks Hammocks
|
|
Twin Oaks Hammocks are hand-crafted by the members of Twin Oaks Community in Louisa, Virginia. Twin Oaks Community is a group of people living and working together, sharing our resources and income. As much as possible, we prepare the materials for our crafts ourselves. The wood for our hammocks and chairs starts out as white oak logs and we do every step ourselves. The rope comes to us as solution dyed olefin fiber, which we spin into a durable 24-strand rope on our giant twisting and laying machine, and then weave into beds for our hammocks and hanging chairs, using an ancient method called "Sprang" technique. Our quality control can be much higher because we take almost all production steps into our own hands.
Chris Oaks has been a member of Twin Oaks Community for over 15 years. During this time at Twin Oaks, Chris has been handcrafting hammocks and other outdoor furniture. Instruction for these arts was gained from master craftspeople with lengthy experience in the trade. Chris is skilled and experienced in Sprang weaving (the weaving method used in the bed of our hammocks and seats of our chairs) and excels in the sword mat ring clew technique used in making the hammock harnesses. Since the last 6-8 years Chris has begun to focus more on woodworking, and was instructed in our wood shop to do the planing, cutting, drilling, sanding, beveling, assembling and hand-finishing of the oak wood that goes into our chairs. |
