I've been a potter since 1973 when I took a community pottery course and said, "This is what I want to do." I guess I was right, as I'm still at it 47 years later. I live in the Blue Ridge Mountains near Charlottesville, VA and am inspired by the vistas I see and the natural world I encounter daily. My work has grown in three directions. The newest work explores forms that start on the potter's wheel and then are altered in organic ways to become almost floral in form. This body of work is called Nancy O's, referencing the influence of my emotional response to the flower paintings of Georgia O'Keeffe. Even after many years working on this series, it still stirs my creative juices. The bottles, vases, and baskets done with horse hair raku method are an outgrowth of my work teaching at Mary Baldwin University in Staunton, VA. I have been teaching there since 2001, sharing my love of clay with many talented students. I also teach many motivated adults at City Clay Charlottesville. I continue to make functional, wheel thrown vessels including platters, bowls, bakers, mugs, canister sets and teapots that enhance daily life. One joy I have is making pottery for the grown children of many past clients.
